The purpose of this site is to serve as an advertising medium to expedite and maximize a groundswell of support directed to the President of the United States to obtain a pardon for Jonathan Pollard. Facts in brief about Pollard

Jonathan Jay Pollard  is a convicted Israeli spy and a former United States Naval civilian intelligence analyst.  As part of the plea agreement for himself and his wife it was agreed,

A.  he would not receive a life sentence,

B.   he would waive his right to a trial and

C.   he would plead guilty to spying.   

Pollard was convicted on one count of spying for Israel, but then, in complete violation of the plea agreement, he received a life sentence in 1987 with a recommendation against parole.  Pollard has been in prison ever since.  NO ONE ELSE IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES has ever received a life sentence for passing classified information to an ally - only Jonathan Pollard.  

Jonathan Pollard:

1.    was never indicted for harming the United States or for compromising codes, agents, or war plans.

2.    was never charged with treason. [Legally, treason is a charge that is only applicable when one spies for an enemy state in time of war.]

3.    was indicted on only one charge: one count of passing classified information to an ally, without intent to harm the United States.

4.   was framed and was mistakenly and falsely accused by the then-Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger of both espionage and of supposedly having given Israel a list of every American spy inside the Soviet Union.

Strategy behind this campaign

I am painfully aware of the enormous amount of effort that has been expended for Pollard.  Much of this effort has been in the form of legal action, petitions, direct requests to past Presidents for a pardon, etc.  and so far to no avail.  I for one firmly believe that if ENOUGH (perhaps a million or more) people petitioned, emailed and called the White House in a concentrated period of time, the President like almost any other human would cave in under the pressure.  I for one would find it hard to imagine that if more than a million people deluged the White House with petitions, emails and calling, that the President would still resist.  The obvious question is whether this could be done and if so how to do it?  Well, I believe I have a positive answer to this question.  Unfortunately, of the many campaigns that have been launched in the past their effectiveness suffers because there is no self perpetuating (expanding) effort to enlist more people.  In the example of a petition campaign, thousands, perhaps tens of thousands of people will sign a petition but then it ceases to grow much further if at all.

The KEY POINT

To overcome this problem I have put together a somewhat unusual campaign.  The KEY POINT of the strategy underlying this campaign is that each supporter commits themselves to finding at least two others (the more the better) who will undertake this same commitment i.e. to solicit other people to do this - then the effort will become self perpetuating.  It will expand and continue to grow resulting in an avalanche of support directed to the President.  This is not an onerous task to ask of another supporter and this is all it takes to achieve unlimited numbers of supporters directing their request to the President.  The number of respondents could easily surpass a million.

Doing your part

Virtually every person is part of some group whether it is a social, political, educational, religious or family group.  Think for a moment about one or more groups of people whom you have contact with who might be interested in lending support to this most worthy cause.  At your next meeting bring this issue up to their attention and direct them to this web site.  And most importantly, explain to them the KEY POINT of the strategy underlying this petition that I mentioned above.  Try to get a firm commitment from at least two people to undertake this same commitment.  By doing so you will have made a contribution that will continue to grow and together with everyone else eventually lead to an enormous outpouring of support directed at the President.

Timing

Originally our strategy was to have this campaign “mushroom” before President Bush leaves office.  Because of the late date this may not happen.  Nevertheless, Obama is subject to pressure just as anybody else is.  (For this reason no president is named in our petition - see the link below).  January 20 is still a target date, but by no means should it be treated as a deadline.  Do your part, the sooner the better, and when the “wave” comes whether it is Bush or Obama in the White House the desired result will almost surely happen.

B.     In addition, email this web address to everyone you can think of who would be interested in helping with this most worthy campaign. 

Please however, do not think that these activities are a substitute to try to get a firm commitment from two other supporters.

 

Beyond Solicitation

  While soliciting is the key point to the underlying strategy of this campaign, of course specific actions associated with this must occur to have the desired impact.  Specifically in addition to soliciting try to have each supporter do as many of the following as possible:

 

1. Send an email to the President at:  comments@whitehouse.gov.  Messages must be in text format only with no graphics or attachments.  Feel free to copy the “Facts in brief about Pollard” above and paste it into the text box of your email.
2. Call the White House often (every 2 days?) at 202-456-1111 and keep leaving messages asking the President to please pardon Jonathan Pollard
